Sound is very important within a thriller film as music can be used to create tension in a certain scene as eerie or intense music being played as either diegetic or non diegetic.

Music is also essential in any film to understand the mood of the characters and also hint at significant bits of the film or suggest upcoming plots

Within thriller films high pitched sounds are also used in order to make the audience feel very uncomfortable as they may expect something unpleasant to come on their screens. and perhaps even uncertain about what is coming up. Furthermore, there maybe a certain level of uncertainty.

Inner Monologue and sometimes narrators are found in some thrillers which creates direct tension from the screen to the audience making it seem they are experiencing the film from the characters point of view.

Sound
Steven Spielberg'Jaws'is very significant for its sound to create an eerie atmosphere. This is due to the sound motif of the shark which was played whenever the shark was in the scene. Overall this would create a suspenseful atmosphere and the audience would be able feel the tension.

Diagetic Sound

This is sound whose source is visible on the screen or whose source is implied to be present by the action of the film. The sound has not been edited it out, this means it sounds like people talking or things like footsteps. The sound could be on or off screen depending on if the source is within or out the frame.

Non-Diagetic Sound

Sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action.his can include things like music, a narration and sound effects. Non-diegetic sounds are often used to add drama to moments that would be silent without it.

Example of diagetic and non-diagetic

The non-diegetic sounds were used as mood music and sound effects to create a moment that feels like something dramatic and intense is about to happen. The music was then cut and the feeling of the entire scene changed and the intensity of the scene vanished.

It is possible crossover both diegetic and non-diegetic to create a trans-diegetic transition. An example of a trans-diegetic transition is when there is a radio on the screen playing a song and when the video cuts to a different scene but the music is still playing in a non-diegetic way.
